A Misunderstood Genre
September 22nd 2006 03:31
[SIZE=1It appears that Science Fiction is nothing but a trashy genre with lots of Aliens and really weird stories. The purpose of this blog is to show readers that this is NOT TRUE. Science Fiction is one of the most challenging genres there is. Take, for example the Stargate series, although it is essentially provided for entertainment many cultural, racial and topical issues are addressed throughout the series. The SG1 team encounter many cultures that reflect our own, therefore in acutal fact this popular television series acts as a commentary on western and other cultures. Many films such as K-Pax, The Island and A.I. Artificial Intelligence explore topics such as human existence, moral values and technological advancement. It often takes an astute mind to interpret the complex messages and plots of a science fiction film or literary work. This blog will attempt to mete out some the many themes and messages featured in Science Fiction film and literature. It will also examine single science fiction pieces. Hopefully this blog will help readers to see the value of this misunderstood genre as well as spark an interest in the issues Science Fiction addresses.

Film & TV on DVD
I think Sci fi is the most socially and culturally relevant of all the genres and the one that enables change more than any other.
Its a shame trashy action sci fi tends to rule the market, but films like Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Gattaca, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Primer etc really offer much more constructive food for thought than any other works of fiction.
