The Matrix: Are we in it?
October 11th 2006 02:14
The Matrix starts with the main character Neo being woken up by his alarm clock. It appears that Neo is an ordinary person with an ordinary job and an ordinary life. However the shade of green that is always present in the "Matrix" indicates that there is something not quite ordinary about Neo's situation. Later Neo discovers that the "real world" he lives in is an artificial world and the actual real world is far from "ordinary". One might think that the viewer is reassured by the fact that he or she is safe in the "real" world. However in a world influenced by representations such as film, books, advertisements and other such media are we really in the "real" world. Neo discovers that his world was created my artificial intelligence to create the illusion that he lived an ordinary life, whilst in reality his energy was used to feed the machines. In a similar manner our so called reality is shaped by media representations. Is any of it actually real? Or, are we - as is Neo - all trapped in an artificial "Matrix"? Film, Books, Newspapers- all of these things shape how we view the world. Yes, these things do come from human opinion, however these opinions are reinforced by media and individual thought is denied. True The Matrix is an interesting and action packed science fiction film. However is there more truth in this film about the artificiality of the world around us than meets the eye?
