Technology - good or bad?
Technology is something we both fear, adore and depend on. There is no doubt that the advancement of technology is speeding forth as we speak and there is nothing we can do about it. Sure, we could suddenly decide to give up on technology and go back to living in caves, however it may not seem worth the starvation, panic killing looting and utter chaos that would no doubt follow such a decision. No we have gone to far to go back now - but what does that mean for us? Is technology good evil or just something we are now stuck with? Science Fiction has a few different views on the subject. 2001 A Space Odyssey is the classic film on the subject of technological advancement. Throughout the film the viewer is subject to several long (and rather tedious I must say) sequences displaying man's achievements. It isn't necessarily frowned upon in the film but it is put into question through the actions of HAL the artificial intelligence whom takes his mission too far. Man however triumphs over this technology when Dave mangages to switch HAL off. This suggests that, although dangerous we will advance and we will still have control. The Matrix, however gives the idea that we may go to far and we will soon be controlled by technology. Indeed, we do seem to be controlled to an extent by our technology. How many houses in the Western world don't at least have a computer? How many teenagers can't possibly live without their mobile phones? Overall we can conclude that there is no escaping the continuous advancement of technology. The question we should ask then, is - will we survive it?
